Desert Landscaping That Still Looks Right in Its Fifth Summer
Native and adapted planting, boulders, decomposed granite, steel edging, finish grading, and low-voltage landscape lighting across El Paso. Out here the plant list is the easy part. The hole, the grade, and the spacing decide what is still standing later.
Most landscapes in this city fail as plant lists long before they fail as installations. The filter people apply is sun tolerance, and it is the wrong filter, because a plant chosen from a photograph taken in a milder climate can be perfectly happy in full sun somewhere else and still be finished here by its second July. Two categories work in El Paso. Native species evolved under this rainfall, this alkaline ground, and this swing between a hard winter freeze and a triple-digit afternoon. Adapted species come from other arid regions and tolerate the same conditions without being from here. Both belong on a plan, and mixing them is how you get a landscape that reads as designed rather than as a restoration project. What does not work is a species that needs an acidic, organic, evenly moist root zone, because that plant will spend years going yellow between the leaf veins on ground it cannot pull iron out of, and no amount of feeding fixes a soil chemistry mismatch. Exposure is the second filter, and it is finer than most plans admit. The west and south sides of a house are not the same address as the north side of the same house. A light stucco wall throws radiant load back at whatever is planted in front of it, and a pale granite surface underneath adds a second helping from below, so a plant rated for full sun can sit in a corner that is effectively hotter than full sun. We place the tender material where the building shades it in the afternoon and put the hard cases on the exposures that punish. The third filter is the one that decides whether the design ages well: mature size, not day-one appearance. A bed planted to look finished the day the crew leaves is a bed that gets sheared into balls in year three and torn out in year six. Spacing comes off the mature spread on the tag, plants get grouped so that one bed is not carrying species with opposite demands, and we tell you plainly at Scope Lock that the installation will look intentionally open at first. That is the plan working, not the plan being thin.
Underneath, the ground is where good intentions go to die. The Hueco Bolson basin fill beneath El Paso is interbedded gravel, sand, silt, and clay with cemented caliche running through it, and it varies over short distances, which is why nobody should be diagnosing your soil from the curb and we do not. What we can plan for is behavior. Where a cemented caliche layer sits under a planting pit, a hole dug into it and stopped there is not a hole, it is a container with no drain: the pit holds every drop that reaches it, the root zone stays saturated, salts concentrate at the bottom, and a healthy plant declines for a year while everyone blames the nursery. So the pit gets carried through the cemented layer to material that will actually accept water, or the plant moves to a location where that is practical, and we say which one we are doing before the plant is on the truck. The geometry of the pit matters as much as the depth. Roots run laterally in the top of the profile, so a pit is widened rather than deepened, the sides get scarified instead of left glazed by an auger or a bucket, and the plant sits on undisturbed ground so it cannot settle. Backfill is the item people get backwards. A rich amended pocket dropped into native ground creates a texture boundary the roots will not cross, and the plant circles inside its own amended pot exactly as it did in the nursery container. Native soil goes back in the hole. Then the root flare, which is the single most common way a good tree is killed slowly: the flare belongs at or slightly above finished grade, and if the trunk goes into the ground like a telephone pole the plant will girdle itself years later. Container stock gets its roots examined and corrected before it is set, because a root circling at planting is a root strangling the trunk at maturity, and a smaller container that establishes fast will pass a large boxed specimen that spent three years recovering from the move. Staking follows the same logic. Most trees here do not need a stake, and where spring wind justifies one it is for anchorage rather than support, tied low and loose so the trunk still moves, and removed after one season. A rigidly staked trunk never builds taper and snaps the year the stakes come off. The parts of a landscape that are not alive are the parts that decide whether the living ones survive the monsoon. Roughly 53 percent of this city's precipitation falls between July and September, inside the monsoon window of June 15 - September 30, per National Weather Service El Paso climate normals, period of record 1879 - 2024. What that distribution means on your lot is that the design event is never the year, it is one cell over your block for forty minutes, and finish grading is what decides whether that water leaves the property or ends up standing against your foundation. So grade is settled first: positive fall carried away from the structure, swales that move sheet flow to a real outlet, planting basins placed where holding water is a benefit rather than a liability, and an armored splash zone wherever a canale or a scupper concentrates a roof onto one point of dirt. Everything else is laid on top of a grade that already works. Decomposed granite is the regional field surface and it is the material most often installed as though it were gravel. It is not. Granite fines migrate under sheet flow, so a path is built as a section rather than a layer: compacted subgrade, granite placed and compacted in lifts, a stabilizing binder where the surface is walked or where it sits on any fall, and screeded to a depth specified in the written scope for its actual use rather than spread until the pallet runs out. It has to be held at the edges, which is what steel edging is for, spiked into compacted subgrade rather than into loose fill, set so the top of the steel holds the granite line without becoming a shin-height hazard. Woven fabric under rock is a separate question and usually the wrong answer in a planting bed, because organic fines build a growing medium on top of it within a few seasons while roots below get nothing, so separation geotextile is used where a base section needs it and left out where it only creates a future maintenance problem. Boulders are placement, not delivery. A boulder set on top of the ground reads as decoration and always will. Buried to roughly a third of its height, with its weathered face turned out and its bedding plane running with the others around it, the same rock reads as geology that the yard was built around, which is the entire point. They get grouped in odd numbers at varying size and set as one gesture rather than strung around a perimeter like a necklace, and the composition gets decided with the machine on site because a boulder is not something anyone wants to move twice. Mulch and rock do opposite jobs and the argument between them is a false choice: rock stores heat all afternoon and gives it back to whatever is planted next to it, while organic mulch moderates soil temperature and builds the biology that makes an alkaline soil workable, so the honest answer on most lots is rock or granite as the field surface with organic mulch held inside the root zones of the planting. Last is light, which is where a desert landscape earns its evenings. Low-voltage landscape lighting is design by subtraction: light the objects, not the yard. A multi-trunk mesquite uplit from two sides at different intensities throws shadow onto a wall and becomes the largest thing in the yard after dark; a stone or stucco wall grazed from a fixture set close to its base turns texture into the subject; a downlight mounted high in a canopy puts moonlight and leaf shadow on a path without a glare source anywhere in view. The craft is in what you cannot see, which means shielding and aiming so no guest ever looks into a lamp, fixture bodies in solid brass or copper rather than stamped aluminum that gives up in this ground, cable gauge sized for the length of the run so the far fixture is not visibly dimmer than the near one, and sleeves set under every hard surface during construction so nothing has to be cut open later. That low-voltage work is ours to perform, under the Texas Occupations Code 1305.003 exemption. The power source is a different license and we do not blur the line: bringing a new dedicated circuit to that work, or altering anything on an existing branch circuit, is performed by the licensed electrical trade under Sage's management.

The planting window is short, and it is not summer
El Paso averages 26 triple-digit days a year, and they do not spread out: June carries 45.1 percent of them, July 34.6 percent, and August 15.7 percent, per National Weather Service El Paso climate normals, period of record 1879 - 2024. A plant set in the ground in June spends its first weeks trying to push roots into hot soil while the top of it is losing everything it has to the air, and even a species that belongs in this desert can be lost during establishment on a schedule that would have been routine in March. February through May gives new material a run of mild weeks to get established before the heat arrives, and October through December gives it a long cool window to put roots down before spring. Sage sequences exterior scopes into February - May and October - December and moves interior scopes into June - August. That is sequencing, not a seasonal shutdown, and hardscape elements, granite, boulders, edging, and lighting all proceed in summer without a problem. What we will not do quietly is set living material into a June afternoon and let you find out in September. Crew safety runs on the same calendar. OSHA's Heat-Related Hazards National Emphasis Program, revised April 10, 2026, authorizes unannounced inspections on heat advisory days, and Sage runs a written heat illness prevention plan with work-rest thresholds and five-day acclimatization for anyone digging, setting stone, or moving material outdoors.
A year of rain arrives in a handful of afternoons, and grade decides where it goes
Annual precipitation here is 8.70 inches, and July through September deliver 4.59 inches of it, roughly 53 percent of the year, in short violent bursts inside the monsoon window of June 15 - September 30, per National Weather Service El Paso climate normals, period of record 1879 - 2024. A total that small talks people out of taking drainage seriously, and it should do the opposite, because the water does not arrive as a season, it arrives as an event. In that hour the landscape is the drainage system whether it was designed to be one or not. Sheet flow finds the lowest line across the lot and takes the granite with it, unrestrained bed edges walk outward, a basin dug in the wrong place holds water against a footing, and a downspout or canale that lands on bare dirt cuts a channel toward the house in a single storm. That is why grade gets shot with an instrument and settled before a single plant location is marked, and why the outlet gets identified as a real destination rather than a low spot somebody hopes will drain. The same burst is what separates a granite path that is still a path in five years from one that has to be re-screeded every summer, and the difference is not the material. It is whether the section was compacted, whether the binder was activated in a dry window, and whether the edge was spiked into something solid.
Caliche, gypsum, and soil that changes between two corners of the same lot

Valley and floodplain addresses face moisture-driven movement. Mesa, Northeast, and Far East addresses face caliche excavation that eats schedule, soils that can collapse the first time they are thoroughly wetted, and gypsum dissolution. Three things follow for a landscape. First, excavation quantity is a real variable, not a rounding error, so we probe before committing to a number rather than discovering caliche with a machine already on the clock. Second, sending concentrated stormwater into a collapsible or gypsum-bearing profile near a footing is the right instrument used in the wrong place, which is why a basin is a design decision about location rather than a default feature. Third, none of this gets asserted from the curb. Where a retaining element, a seat wall, or a grade change is carrying structure rather than defining a bed, we recommend a geotechnical report and design the footing to what it says. The alkaline, salt-bearing character of that same ground is also why the plant palette is chosen against the soil rather than against a catalog, and why fixture bodies buried in it are specified in brass or copper.

The grade and the plant schedule are written down before anything is dug

That document exists because of a specific pattern. The Houzz 2026 U.S. Houzz and Home Study found 37 percent of renovating homeowners went over budget in 2025. In landscape work the mid-project change has a familiar shape: the beds are in, the granite is spread, and then somebody notices the yard drains toward the house, which means the finished surface comes back up to fix a grade that should have been settled on paper. Texas issues no statewide general contractor license, so the credential that governs your address is the municipal one. Sage is licensed by the City of El Paso, LCCR26-00183, insured and bonded, and pulls permits under that license rather than asking you to sign as an owner and carry the exposure that rides with it. For planning, the City's FY2026 Schedule C lists a trade base fee of $110, a single-trade permit at about $116 including the technology fee, a two-inspection permit at $160, demolition at $115, and residential plan review submittal at $200, with plan review running 2 - 10 days. That review window is schedule you put on the calendar at the start rather than absorb at the end. The lighting line is drawn just as plainly, and it works in your favor. The invisible line items are written as contract items
Landscape is the easiest scope in construction to make two proposals look identical on, because the plant list is the only part most people compare, and the plant list is the smallest part of the work. Everything that decides the outcome is buried by the time you see the finished yard: how wide the planting pits were opened and whether a cemented layer was actually carried through or simply bottomed out on, whether native soil went back in the hole or a bagged mix created a pot in the ground, whether the root flare was set at grade or sunk two inches under settled backfill, the depth and compaction of the granite section and whether a binder was ever used, whether the edging was spiked into compacted subgrade or into fill, whether the grade was shot with an instrument or eyeballed from the patio, and whether the fixtures are solid brass on properly sized cable or stamped housings on undersized wire. When one proposal lands far under the others, that list is where the difference came from, because it is the only place it can come from. Why do my plants keep dying even though they are supposed to be desert plants?
Four causes account for most of it, and none of them is the nursery. The first is the pit. A hole dug into a cemented caliche layer and stopped there holds everything that reaches it with nowhere to go, so the root zone stays saturated and salts concentrate at the bottom, and a plant that tolerates drought perfectly well has no tolerance at all for sitting in a bathtub. The second is depth. If the root flare where the trunk widens into the roots is buried instead of visible at grade, the plant is on a slow clock, and the decline usually shows up years after anyone remembers who planted it. The third is what came in the container. Roots that were circling the pot and went into the ground uncorrected keep circling and eventually girdle the trunk. The fourth is exposure, which is finer than most people plan for: a species that is fine on the north side of a house can be sitting in reflected load off a west stucco wall with a pale granite surface underneath adding more from below, and that corner is effectively hotter than the plant tag ever contemplated. When we are called to look at a failing planting, those are the four things we check first, in that order.
Should I use rock or mulch, and how deep does decomposed granite need to be?
They are not competing choices, they are different jobs, and the best answer on most El Paso lots uses both. Rock and decomposed granite are field surfaces: durable, stable under a monsoon burst when they are installed as a proper section, and they do not blow away or break down. What they also do is absorb heat all afternoon and release it into the evening, which raises the load on anything planted next to them and on the wall behind them. Organic mulch does the opposite inside the planting itself, moderating soil temperature at the root zone and building the biology that makes an alkaline desert soil workable, and it breaks down, which is a feature rather than a defect. So a common answer is granite or rock across the field with organic mulch held inside the root zones of the beds. On depth, there is no universal number, because a decorative field that nobody walks on and a path that carries daily foot traffic are different sections. What matters is that the granite is placed over compacted subgrade, compacted in lifts rather than raked out in one pass, stabilized where it is walked or where it sits on any fall, and held by an edge spiked into compacted material. The depth for your surface gets specified in the written scope in a number you can hold us to and verify while it is still going in.
Do I need a permit for landscaping in El Paso, and is landscape lighting electrical work?
