Bermuda and buffalograss sod

For most El Paso lawns it is hybrid Bermudagrass in a seedless selection, and for a lawn that is looked at more than played on, buffalograss. More on which grass makes sense as sod

Laid tight, rolled and watered in

Each slab is butted tight to the next with no gap and no overlap, the end joints are staggered from row to row like brickwork, and the pieces cut for a walk or an edge are kept large, because small pieces dry out first. More on the first 30 days of water

What the scope covers
  • Removal of the old lawn, rock or overgrowth in the lawn area, dug out rather than sprayed
  • Soil loosened and worked, with compost mixed in where the ground is sandy or compacted
  • Rough and finish grading so the ground falls away from the house, with the soil finished below the walks, the patio slab and the stucco weep screed
  • Hybrid Bermudagrass sod in a seedless selection, or buffalograss, both on the City of El Paso Approved Plant and Tree List
  • Sod laid in a running bond with tight, staggered seams and large pieces cut to fit at every edge
  • The new lawn rolled and given its first soaking the day it is laid
  • Steel edging between the lawn and rock or planting beds, anchored into compacted ground
  • Permits for Sage's own scope, where the work requires one, pulled under its City of El Paso registration, LCCR26-00183

Sod and Grass in El Paso.

When is the best time to lay Bermuda sod in El Paso?

From mid-spring through summer, when the soil is warm and Bermuda is actively growing. The National Weather Service in El Paso puts the average last spring freeze on March 17 and the average first fall freeze on November 13, and Bermuda goes dormant once the frosts arrive, so a lawn laid late in the season has little time to root before winter. Summer works too, with two cautions: from April through September El Paso Water allows watering only before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m., and the 30-day establishment permit is requested before the sod arrives.

Can I water new sod every day in El Paso?

Yes, with a permit. The owner of newly seeded or sodded turf can apply to El Paso Water for a permit that allows daily watering until it establishes, for no more than 30 days (El Paso Municipal Code 15.13.060(A)), at 915-594-5508. After that, the lawn follows the regular schedule: no residential watering on Mondays, even-numbered addresses on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday, odd-numbered addresses on Wednesday, Friday or Sunday, up to three days a week (EPMC 15.13.020).

What drives the cost of sod installation in El Paso?

The ground more than the square footage: how much old lawn, rock or fill has to come out, how compacted the soil is, how much grading it takes to make the yard fall away from the house, how many curves and edges the sod has to be cut to, whether steel edging is part of the plan, and how far the pallets travel from the street to the yard. Pricing is a phone conversation with Sage. The complimentary consultation returns a preliminary assessment within 48 hours, not a price, and the investment is confirmed at the paid on-site Feasibility Audit and fixed in writing at Scope Lock.

What the ground needs, how much of a yard can be lawn, sod against artificial turf, which grass suits El Paso and how it is laid, each with its source.
