Ironwork here is not an accessory bolted onto a house at the end. It is a regional craft with a long borderland lineage: the reja over a front window, the scrolled courtyard gate, the twisted picket with a forged collar that a bent flat bar and a ground weld only imitate. We treat it that way, and we treat the engineering behind it that way too. Before anything is cut, three decisions get settled on paper, because those three decide whether the piece still looks and works right after the fifth summer: the steel section, the coating system, and how the metal attaches to the building.
The coating is the product. Mild steel does not fail in El Paso because the bar was thin. It fails because mill scale was never removed, or a shop sprayed color directly over bare hot rolled stock, or a field weld burned through a factory finish and nobody came back to repair the film. El Paso averages 26 triple digit days a year, with 45.1 percent of them landing in June and 34.6 percent in July (National Weather Service El Paso climate normals, period of record 1879 - 2024), so a south or west facing gate spends its worst months under sustained UV and surface heat. Where a joint has to be welded on site, its location is chosen on the shop drawing so the finish can be restored properly instead of pretending it will never be disturbed.
Then attachment, which is where the real liability sits. A guardrail is not trim. It is a life safety component, and stucco cannot carry one. Whether it is three coat over lath or a thinner one coat system, stucco is cladding rather than structure, so a rail leg or a bar anchor has to reach framing or solid blocking behind it, and the penetration has to be flashed and sealed on the way through. Masonry carries its own trap. An expansion anchor set in the hollow face shell of a CMU wall feels solid on install day and lets go later under load, which is why hollow cells get screen tube epoxy anchors or the anchor moves to a grouted cell we have actually located rather than assumed. We probe, we mark, and the anchor type per substrate goes into the written scope before fabrication starts.

Galvanize, then powder, and know why the order matters
A duplex system, hot dip galvanizing under a powder topcoat, delivers service life that neither layer reaches alone. It also has a failure mode most shops learn the hard way: galvanized steel outgasses during the powder cure and the finish pinholes unless the part is preheated and degassed first. Coating chemistry matters just as much. Epoxy powder is tough but chalks under direct UV, so on exterior work we specify a UV stable polyester. Color is not only taste either. A dark leaf on a west facing driveway gate runs hot through June and July and grows against its own latch clearance, so we set the gaps for summer expansion rather than for the mild morning the gate was hung.
Rust bleed onto stucco starts inside the tube
The orange streak running down a stucco wall under an iron fence is almost never the wall's fault. It is oxide washing off bare steel at a breached weld, a drilled anchor, or a field cut saw edge, or it is water that entered a hollow rail and could not leave. Annual precipitation here is 8.70 inches, and 4.59 of those inches, roughly 53 percent, arrive July through September in short bursts (National Weather Service El Paso climate normals, period of record 1879 - 2024). Sealed tube ends turn a picket into a reservoir during those storms, and the inside face was never coated. On stucco the stain absorbs rather than sits on the surface, so it does not scrub off. Our details are boring on purpose: weep openings at the low points, coated interiors where the section allows, hot dip or stainless fasteners, isolation and sealant at every penetration, and a repaired film wherever a torch or a drill touched the piece.
Caliche, first wetting, and the gate that stopped closing
A gate is only as plumb as the hole its post sits in. On the Mesa, the Northeast, and the Far East, cemented caliche makes post holes slow and hard to dig, which is exactly why shallow footings get rationalized on work awarded on low bid alone. Those same areas include soils that can collapse on first wetting, so a leaking irrigation line or an unmanaged downspout beside a gate post is a real settlement risk rather than a theoretical one. Valley and floodplain addresses face moisture driven movement instead, which is how a leaf hung dead plumb in May starts dragging its latch in September. The Hueco Bolson basin fill under this city is interbedded gravel, sand, silt, and clay with cemented caliche, and it changes over short distances, so we do not call a soil type from the curb. Where soils drive structural scope, we recommend a geotechnical report and design the post footing to it.

Rail height, opening spacing, graspable profile, and escape opening clearances are not stylistic preferences, and they are not settled by what the last fence on the street looks like. We do not publish dimensions on a web page and then verify them later, because the code edition the City of El Paso has adopted is the only version that governs your address and it is the one we work from. The sequence is fixed: we field measure the actual opening, stair, or balcony, draw the guard, handrail, or grille to that measurement, confirm every controlling dimension against the adopted edition, and hold the approved drawing at Scope Lock so nothing gets adjusted on the shop floor to save a cut. You see that drawing and sign off on it before steel is ordered, which is also the moment to change your mind about a scroll pattern or a post location, rather than after a leaf is welded up.

Is powder coating actually better than paint on iron out here?

Wet coating keeps one real advantage, field repairability, and that matters because site welds and drilled anchors always break the film somewhere. Our usual answer is both, with a matched wet touch up kept on hand for the joints that get worked on site.
Do I need a permit for a driveway gate or security bars in El Paso?
It depends on the scope, and we confirm it with the City before anything is fabricated rather than after. Bars and rails that do not alter structure often ride along inside a broader permitted scope. Automation changes the answer, because a gate operator brings electrical work into the job. Yes, and the release is the whole design problem. At install we open it from inside the room with you standing there, and we show whoever sleeps in that room how it works. It is worth having existing bars looked at too. A repaint or a re anchor done without care can seize a working release shut, and that is exactly the detail a fire inspector or an insurer will put a hand on.
Can you automate a gate I already have?
Often, but the leaf gets evaluated before the operator does. A gate built to be pushed by hand is frequently too flexible in the frame, too heavy at the hinge, or out of plumb from post settlement, and hanging a motor on it accelerates every one of those problems. We check leaf weight against hinge or roller capacity, look at the post footing, measure available runback for a slide, and confirm there is a workable path for conduit and a place for the operator to sit that is not in the way of a car door. Bringing power to it is licensed electrical work, so the licensed trade handles that piece on a schedule we coordinate. If the existing leaf will not take automation, we say so during the Risk Review rather than after the concrete is in.
