Concrete That Cracks Where the Plan Says It Will

Driveways, slabs on grade, sidewalks, patios, and footings placed on a documented subgrade, cured on a written schedule, and jointed to a layout drawn before the truck is ordered.

The Work

Concrete is the one trade on a job site where the mistake is permanent. Drywall gets patched, paint gets recoated, tile gets pulled and reset. A slab placed at two in the afternoon in June, with water added at the chute to keep it workable, is a slab you live with or a slab you demolish. When flatwork fails, the trowel work is the visible part and almost never the mechanism. Two decisions made before the truck arrived set the outcome: what the concrete was placed on, and when it was placed.

Hot weather concreting is the central discipline, and it is not only about air temperature. What drives plastic shrinkage cracking is the rate of evaporation off the fresh surface, which is a function of concrete temperature, air temperature, relative humidity, and wind moving across the slab. When evaporation outruns the bleed water rising up through it, the top of the slab shrinks against a body that is still plastic and it tears: short, random, roughly parallel cracks that show within hours and rarely reach a formed edge. Heat is only one of the four inputs, which is why a slab can tear on a morning that never felt extreme. The second failure is quieter. Concrete stiffens fast in heat, and the field fix for lost slump is a hose at the chute, which raises the water to cement ratio, drops compressive strength, and adds shrinkage the slab will carry for the rest of its life. Every real answer happens before the first trowel pass: place in the early morning, solve workability through the mix design and admixtures rather than a hose, hold an evaporative retarder on the bleed surface between finishing passes, and wet cure for the full assigned duration instead of walking off after the last pass.

Underneath, the ground is the other half of the story. Caliche fights the excavator and then fools the crew

A cemented caliche layer is hard enough to slow a machine down, and that hardness gets read as bearing. It is not. Once caliche has been broken up it does not go back the way it came out, and rubble pushed into a trench and tracked over is a soft pocket under a slab edge. It surfaces later as a crack that steps, or a joint that has settled on one side while the other stayed put. Excavation quantity swings on it too, which is why we probe before committing to a number rather than discovering it with a machine already on the clock. Our approach is to dig to competent material, then replace it with something that can be moisture conditioned and compacted to a density we can verify and document before forms go up.

The water that reaches your subgrade is water your property delivers

Those get investigated before anything is patched, because filling a crack that is still moving only produces a wider one later.

Do I need a permit to pour a driveway or patio in El Paso?

Often yes, and it turns on what the flatwork does more than on how large it is. How thick should a concrete driveway be, and do I really need rebar?

Both are specified from what will actually park on it and what it is sitting on, which is why a number pulled off a forum is useless for your lot. The more important point is this: reinforcement does not stop concrete from cracking. It holds cracks tight and transfers load across them, and only when the steel is supported on chairs at the specified depth. Bar laid on the ground and hooked upward by hand during the pour is not reinforcement, it is a receipt. Thickness, bar size and spacing, chair height, and dowel detailing into any existing slab edge are decided from the loads and the subgrade and written down before the forms go up.
